    Our History

ROOTS by Emeli Sandé, TIME TRAVELLING SINCE 1824

The Macallan’s story is one of timeless progression – a journey marked by patience and dedication as we travel from past to present and into the future. Our roots run deep. We have distilled since 1824 at Easter Elchies where our Spiritual Home and Distillery still thrive today. Every decision honours our past and guides our future.

In celebration of The Macallan turning 200 Years Young, internationally renowned British singer-songwriter Emeli Sandé, alongside Ollie Green, has composed a poignant soundtrack, ‘Roots.’ It is an artistic celebration of The Macallan’s legacy, our roots in nature, craftsmanship and community, as we travel through two centuries past.

    Time Travelling Since 1824

Directed by Jérémie Rozan, the music film for ‘Roots’ encapsulates the spirit of time travel through past, present and future generations of The Macallan all bound by the same unwavering roots.

An intimate and raw performance of ‘Roots’ by Emeli Sandé in the Cave Privée at The Macallan Estate, during our 200th Year, depicts the tale of two timeless characters from The Macallan’s past and future. Scottish actor David Tennant is our protagonist, characterising both roles.

    Timeless Spirit

We are inspired by the natural world around us, and celebrate mastery and craft in everything we do. Our unwavering roots are the red thread that binds us from generation to generation, making The Macallan what it is today.

Our Whisky Makers are custodians of our legacy, carefully overseeing the maturation of single malt whisky distilled by their predecessors to craft The Macallan’s whisky today, whilst laying down casks for future generations to come.

"Roots means legacy. You have your roots and they spread so far around the surrounding ground. You have your trunk and that’s your journey through life the branches can go here, and there, but at the end of the day, everything is coming from the same point."
