The Macallan is 200 Years Young – we are looking at our history, with our eyes set on the future. It is only in looking back that you can determine the future, and so in the present it is this infinite space we make decisions that both honour that past and guide our future.
Two centuries have passed since Alexander Reid distilled the first batch of whisky in his curiously small stills and thus began the extraordinary legacy of The Macallan. We are looking back on that legacy, everything that has been achieved and is still to come. It is a celebration of time travel – explored through five themes: Incomparable; Creativity, Craftsmanship, Legacy and Sustainability.
As we embark on this momentous year, key characters in our story reflect on 200 Years Young and what it means for The Macallan.
THE 200 YEARS LOGO
The Six Pillars are intertwined to tell the story of the 200 years logo. At The Macallan, roots run deep. We have distilled since 1824 at Easter Elchies where our Spiritual Home and Distillery remains and thrives today. We are guided at all times by the Six Pillars: the fundamental principles that act as a compass for everything we do at The Macallan. Our DNA, our core values, the ideas, people and places that make us who we are, are the red thread running through everything we do.
The wave pattern in the logo evokes the connection between our foundations and our future, merging the curve of the River Spey with the rolling curves of the Distillery roof. It also contains within it an echo of the infinity symbol, evoking the concepts of time and generational legacy.
Time Travel
On the commencement of our 200 year anniversary, this 200 Years Young logo is the embodiment of our legacy: the past, present and future of The Macallan. The design for the 200 Years Young logo seeks to infuse typography with symbolism drawn from two centuries of The Macallan.
The animation launching our 200 year anniversary ends where our journey begins, at The Macallan Estate, where the sherry seasoned oak casks patiently imbue our whisky with its rich aromas, flavours and natural colour.
The peacock feathers represent Natural Colour, one of our Six Pillars. The grapevines are a nod to the tradition, which is still maintained by The Macallan, of maturing whisky in oak casks, which are sherry seasoned in Jerez de la Frontera. This leads onto the chalky white Albariza soil where the sherry grapes are grown.
We carefully and respectfully source the wood we use to produce our exceptional oak casks, the single greatest contributor of the outstanding quality and distinctive aromas and flavours of The Macallan. The Barley, that becomes our new make spirit, filling the Curiously Small Copper stills on our Estate.
