The Power of Nature: Honouring The Legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh

For over two centuries, The Macallan has been an emblem of craftsmanship and legacy, drawing inspiration from nature. For these releases we were inspired by the legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, working in close partnership with the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.

Inspired by Mackintosh's deep reverence for nature, the circularity of life, his work, philosophy and poetic beauty, we created a collection of short documentary style films, exploring the impact of Charles Rennie Mackintosh through characters from different artistic disciplines that share the influence Mackintosh has had on them. Each film speaks to the shared values and synergies between The Macallan, Mackintosh and each of the characters.

A special thanks to The Hill House, House of an Art Lover, Mackintosh at the Willow and Macintosh Queen's Cross for access to some of the most cherished and iconic locations by Mackintosh.

Meet the artists, creatives, and historians who are the torchbearers of Mackintosh's legacy, each one offering unique insights into his life and work.

The intimate narrative explores how the natural world continues to inspire new generations, mirroring The Macallan and Mackintosh’s own journey of discovery and creation, and how this is expressed through The Tree of Life and Art is the Flower.

The Macallan Art is the Flower

The Macallan Art is the Flower has been respectfully crafted to celebrate the circularity of nature captured in Mackintosh’s 1902 stained-glass panel ‘The Spirit of the Rose’.

Mackintosh poetically considered art as the flower to life's green leaf. He appealed to the arts and crafts community to ‘offer the flowers of the art that is in you – the symbols of all that is noble – and beautiful – and inspiring.’
